The South Carolina Order of Confederate Rose was honored
to
sponsor the reading of the Roll Call of the Dead.
We would like to thank
all of those who donated their
time to take shift of reading or ringing,
and the Honor Guardsmen.
A bell was rung each time one of over 18,000 names was read. The names
included South Carolina's soldiers, sailors and marines who died in the
War.
This event is done annually on the Friday prior to the SCV's
Confederate Memorial Day ceremonies in May. Those interested in
participating will have the opportunity to sign up for next May's event.
The sign-up should start around the first of the year.
As you can see, this event takes all day and into the night.
Unless this event falls on the new State Holiday (Confederate Memorial
Day, May 10), the statehouse is open for business.
The flagpole next to the Confederate Monument now sports a
nylon flag that waves with the slightest breeze, much better than the
first one which was in heavy cotton.
Many thanks to Denise Woods who initiated this project at the Flag Rally
2000.
