The Brigadier General Samuel McGowan Camp # 40, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Laurens, SC invited us to participate in the re-interment of Captain William Downs Farley, Scout for General
J.E.B. Stuart. Captain Farley was mortally wounded at the Battle of Brandy Station and was buried in Culpepper, Va. His final wish was to be brought home and buried with his family.
The memorial service was held in the Laurens Square on the South side of the old Courthouse. Following the memorial service, the burial was at the Laurens City Cemetery.
One of the older traditions in a full-honor funeral is
the caparisoned
horse. This military tradition allowed for a funeral of a soldier or Marine in the rank of
colonel or higher. The horse is led behind the caisson wearing an empty
saddle with rider's boots reversed in the stirrups, indicating the warrior
will never ride again.
