Confederate Memorial Day
activities in Columbia are usually planned for the Saturday prior to May
10 (which is actually Confederate Memorial Day in SC). |
| The services in Elmwood Cemetery are arranged by the UDC
Chapters in the Columbia area. This year, the honor went to the Wade
Hampton Chapter UDC.
As you can see, the torrent of rain did not keep the soldiers from
attending in strength. The SCV, OCR, and UDC were well represented. It was
only the public that had reduced numbers. Maybe when the public sees how
dedicated we are to honoring our heritage, that they will come around. |
| The SCOCR distributed black arm bands to the public and the participants
again this year. The rain hampered the distribution, and as people got in
and out of their rain gear, the ribbons disappeared. We will do this next
year, and at many other events. |
 |
| Fortuitously, the rain slackened for much of the parade to
the State House. Somewhere in route, the umbrellas turned into flags.
|
| The SCV Ceremony at the State House was chaired by Mr. Jeff
O'Cain of Lt. Gen. Wade Hampton Camp.

|
| Recognition was given to the SCV members who are Guardians
and taking care of a Confederate grave.
|
| |
| The rain could have caused some safety hazards, so there was
no microphone system. But the silence was broken by some of the loudest
cannon salutes I have heard!
|
| The picnic returned this year and was moved to a more
sheltered spot behind the statehouse, right next to the Confederate
Women's Monument.
