I was lucky enough to be able
to attend two of the civilian sessions:
“Patriotism
and Practicality: The Civil War Era Homespun Dress” -Vicki
Betts
“Tracking Down the Truth in Civil War Quilt
Stories” - Merikay
Waldvoge
The Forum generously allowed photography of the display area. I didn't get
all the details about the items, but will label the images as best I can.
They will be having the Forum every year or every other year, so be on the
look out for it. Their website was http://www.artifactforum.com/ |
| I left many of the images at their higher resolution so each
category will have a separate page to help it load faster. Be sure to view
each page. Some items will have 2 thumbnails, one for a printable size
image and the other for a large image that you can scroll around on your
screen. These large images can show stitching detail to those of you who
are interested. |

"Juanita Leisch is a nationally-known researcher, writer and speaker
on the subject of Civil War civilians. Her book, Who Wore What: Women's
Wear, 1861-65, has become a "must-read" for Civil War
re-enactors and others for identifying and re-producing clothing of women
in the Civil War. The method she devised for analyzing clothing
characteristics seen in photographs has been adopted for two other books
currently in the works; Men's Wear, and Children's Wear." Also by Ms.
Leisch is An Introduction to Civil War Civilians, 86 pp, softcover. |
Vicki Betts

"My
research interests fall into two main categories:
mid-19th century U.S. history, particularly Southern
women during the Civil War; and the history of Smith County, Texas, also
focusing on the Civil War, particularly the Camp Ford POW facility near
Tyler.

Merikay Waldvogel
"In 1986, she wrote Quilts of Tennessee: Images of Domestic
Life Prior to 1930 with Bets Ramsey, based on their statewide quilt
search. Merikay's other books are: Soft Covers for Hard Times:
Quiltmaking and the Great Depression; Patchwork Souvenirs of the
1933 Chicago World's Fair; and Southern Quilts: Surviving Relics of
the Civil War."
