The South Carolina Order of Confederate Rose
was honored to sponsor the
Reading of the Roll Call of the SC Dead
May 2, Friday, 2003

The Reading took place on the SC Statehouse steps on Friday, May 2, 2003. The ceremony began at 10:00 AM, and continued through the evening and night until after 1:00 am Saturday morning. Ten random names were read at the SCV Confederate Memorial Day Services on Saturday morning to complete the event.

This page is intended to acknowledge and THANK ALL THOSE WHO HELPED US accomplish this event. We had many volunteers who were not on the schedule, so I don't have all the full names and emails. Please send this link to anyone who was there, but not listed, and send me their name so it may be included. Photos will be on separate pages - we took 101 images. If you have any you want to share, send them to the webmaster.
The Readers and Bell-Ringers
I have made a chart below but I know that I don't have everyone. Some people are shown in the photos, but I couldn't match up the faces with the names. Please notify me of any names that I should add.

The Honor Guard
Rod Gardner planned to be honor guard at 10 am but was needed to ring. He was our only soldier until late afternoon and got lots of attention from the children on the tours. We need more soldiers in the daytime next year.
Gen. Ellison Capers Camp #1212
and Gen. David F Jamison Camp #1954 signed up to furnish Honor Guards, but I saw some soldiers who didn't belong to those camps. Most are on the photo page, but we may have missed a few. Please let me know the name of your group and I will post it. We were very happy to have you all there.

A SPECIAL THANKS
Pat and Jeanne were my travel companions; gave me continuous moral support and advice, food, patience; read/rang many times on Fri; read/rang last 10 names Sat morning.
Several people graciously took over the scheduling of podium time so that we could go to supper and check into the motel. We tried very hard to allow everyone who wanted to read or ring at least fifteen minutes. My personal thanks go to all of you.
Items Loaned for the Event
Our main props were loaned by John Dangerfield (podium, PA system, bell), George Naumann (bell stand), Lee Wilson (book Broken Fortunes). We had a back up book that volunteers could look at before their turn, and it was loaned by Charleston CWRT. The lovely banner on the podium was made for us by Jeanne and Dave. Roy Gelwicks loaned his pickup truck and hand cart as well as the many hours his wife spent on this website and event.
The Muscle
We couldn't have set up without the help of many hands. Fred, Rod, and Lee made trips to the truck. As usual, we brought too many items, but most of them were needed.

The Fellowship
As more people arrived in late afternoon and evening, the crowd of volunteers grew. The weather cooled off and the statehouse grounds are beautiful at night. The volunteers were mingled among the statues of soldiers and statesmen; and monuments to those who died in other wars were there to show that South Carolinians remember those who sacrificed for us.

"The massive columns adorning the front portico are each cut from one solid piece of stone and are believed to be the largest monolithic columns used in a building in the United States. Because the columns were lying on the ground at the time of the burning of Columbia, they survived the general destruction the rest of the city experienced...The granite for the structure...came mostly from the Granby quarry, which was located about two miles south of the State House." When you lean against the cool stone, just imagine . . .

I don't think that the picnic-like atmosphere detracted from the honor that we paid to the Confederate Soldiers. I feel that as each name was read, that soldier was with us. He would have been proud to be among those who still honor his beliefs, and are working to keep the Southern and Confederate principles alive.

SCV
Frank Berry, Commander of Palmetto Camp 22, was very kind to again include this event on Saturday morning. The compatriots of this camp, and the others in the Columbia, Lexington, Dentsville area were very supportive.

Statehouse Security
The security men were very friendly, helpful and patient, even Spivey's mean brother.
