Politics are out! Picnic is back!

I have just been in contact with the planners of the Columbia Confederate Memorial Day Program. As Rev. Bobby Eubanks stated at the recent SCV convention, politics take away from the solemnity of the memorial, and there won’t be in politics this year.

The picnic will be in the back of the statehouse, under the large overhang, near the Confederate Women’s Monument. This will be immediately following the program on the front steps, sometime after 1 pm. THE PSRS IS ASKED TO BRING THE DESSERTS. They are expecting around 250 people to be eating, so load ‘em up with sweet stuff!

The SC Order of Confederate Rose will meet after everyone has been through the picnic line. Please come and meet your new officers and committee chairmen.

Palmetto Battalion members - see the Battalion site for info on forming up at 9:30 for Elmwood Cemetery.

This is NOT the parade route! This map just shows the cemetery and the statehouse. If you plan to drive between the two, remember that some roads will be blocked, starting shortly before the parade.
Go to www.mapquest.com to print driving directions from your location.

For those of you with GPS, I found a site that gave this info for Elmwood:

The Monument to Confederate Women, called Angels of the Confederacy, was erected in 1912. The sculptor was Frederick W. Ruckstull. The inscription on the northwest side reads: “In this monument, generations unborn shall hear the voice of a grateful people testifying to the sublime devotion of the women of South Carolina in their country’s need. Their unconquerable spirit strengthened the thin lines of gray, their tender care was solace to the stricken. Reverence for God and unfaltering faith in a righteous cause inspired heroism that survived the immolation of sons, and courage that bore the agony of suspense and the shock of disaster. The tragedy of the Confederacy may be forgotten, but the fruits of the noble service of the daughters of the South are our perpetual heritage. ”
